CCWAA History Through the Years

From brave young officers returning from World War II to today's international champions

The Origins

Country Club Wrestling started as our brave young officers returned from the second world war. Admiral David Dixon Porter was instrumental in setting up the first country club wrestling team at Toledo Country Club in September of 1946.

Wrestling was treated as a casual recreation activity from its beginning until 1952 when the Country Club Wrestling Association of America was formed due to the growing popularity of inter-club bouts.

1954 Druid Hills Highland Husters

In the post-war prosperity of 1946, a remarkable transformation began in America's most exclusive country clubs. What started as friendly competition between members at the prestigious Norwood Country Club evolved into the Country Club Wrestling Association (CCWAA) in 1948. The founding fathers of this distinguished sport believed that wrestling could be elevated beyond mere physicality to become an art form worthy of the country club set.

In addition to first CCWAA title bout, the club has hosted many prestigious events including the National Left-Handed Golfer’s Championship in 1936 and 1940 and the three player tennis championship in 1971.

Losing to Dr. Grayston, in a close match that was remembered as one of the most litigious in history; Dr. Burtis Sanderson later regretted his decision to wrestle Dr. Grayston with his right hand tucked into his wrestling trunks.

It wasn't long before the ladies got in on the country club wrestling scene. In this inter-club bout, Mrs. Janet Wickline is wrenching the spine of Mrs. Kimberly Roberts of New Bedford Connecticut. Although the bout was well received by the fans in attendance it would be many years before women would be fully welcome in the country club wrestling scene.

Pictured here in a self-portrait, Dr. Gutfried Gotlester, PsyD.

At the 1967 annual meeting in Atlantic City, New Jesery, the Association featured several sessions on important health considerations among country club wrestlers. In the first session on mental health sponsored by an athletic association, Dr. Gutfried Gotlester, PsyD. was the first to identify American country club wrestling as a diagnosible behavior. In addition to his psychological support of the association, Dr. Gotlester introduced masked wrestling to the CCWAA.

Dr. G, as he was know in the ring, was a stong advocate for the free expression of wrestling personalities. This new APA based support of country club wrestling culture opened many doors for our more flamboyant members.

Welcome Executive Director - Ricky Star

Summer 1976 - Bicentennial Special: This landmark issue announced a new era for the CCWAA with the appointment of Ricky Star as Executive Director. The patriotic red, white, and blue themed cover perfectly captured the spirit of America's bicentennial year while showcasing Star's transition from ring warrior to executive leadership. Featured prominently in his wrestling attire against a parking lot backdrop, Star's appointment promised a "Wrestling Revolution" that would reshape the organization. The issue's innovative "From Ring Star to Executive!" inset showed his transformation into the boardroom, while the exclusive interview revealed his controversial vision for parking lot brawls as "The New Frontier" of professional wrestling. This Summer '76 Special remains one of the most significant issues in WRESTLE-O-RAMA! history, marking the beginning of the Ricky Star era that would define CCWAA wrestling for years to come.

10 time CCWAA tag team champions, Biff McClugin, CBM and Buff Overstraight, CBM

10 time CCWAA tag team champions Biff McClugin and Buff Overstraight, were also local television weathermen for KTLH, Woodland Hills, California. Know as the weatherman, weatherwunderkind, Meteormen & many other fan favorites, Biff & Buff epitomize the heyday of the country club wrestling culture. Fan favorites from coast to coast, Biff & Buff were very generous with their time bringing joy to thousands of country club wrestling fans in special inter-club bout appearances.

Longtime wrestling club members recall professional athletes Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, and Bob Waterfield often entering the ring during the off-season. But no members of WHCC were more well liked than Biff & Buff the tag team weather disaster, duo of the doppler, twin tornadoes, hot front and cold front colliders. WHCC has always encouraged the growth of women’s interest in the sport. Team plaques line the walls of the ladies locker room. The club’s first Women’s Auxiliary formed in 1946, and has grown to become a popular pastime for our lady members with a roster of 147 on the team, of which 126 have wins in inter-club bouts.

Ricky Star's Historic Third Championship - 1978

Ricky Star's Historic Third Championship - 1978: This iconic photograph captures the moment Richard "Ricky Star" Starbinski claimed his unprecedented third CCWAA Singles Championship, cementing his legacy as one of the organization's most dominant performers. Wearing his signature white tights adorned with gold stars, Star celebrates triumphantly while his defeated opponent lies prone on the canvas. The packed arena, filled with formally-dressed country club members in tuxedos and evening gowns, exemplifies the unique sophistication of CCWAA events during the late 1970s. The vintage CCWAA banners hanging overhead, including the "Country Wrestling Alliance 1965" banner, serve as a reminder of the organization's storied history. This victory would mark Star's longest championship reign at 22 months and set the stage for his eventual transition from performer to executive leadership. The image has become one of the most reproduced photographs in WRESTLE-O-RAMA! history, appearing in countless retrospectives celebrating Star's dual legacy as both champion wrestler and visionary executive director.

Fall 1993 - Vol. 25, No. 3: WRESTLE-O-RAMA!

Fall 1993 - Vol. 25, No. 3: WRESTLE-O-RAMA! embraced the extreme '90s with this radical redesign featuring "The Hostile Takeover" Maxwell McCallahan III, who at 52 years old continued his unprecedented championship reign. The magazine's bold new "EXTREME QUARTERLY" branding, complete with lightning bolt logo and cyber-grid graphics, perfectly captured the era's over-the-top aesthetic. This issue spotlighted McCallahan's transformation of a country club driving range into the CCWAA's most exclusive wrestling venue, introducing his revolutionary "corporate merger" match formats. The cover's multiple action shots showcased his devastating "Golden Parachute" finishing move, while the aggressive neon design and "MULTIMEDIA CD-ROM INCLUDED!" burst (despite being purely promotional) epitomized early '90s wrestling media. With teasers for the upcoming "WRESTLE-O-RAMA ONLINE!" website, this issue marked the CCWAA's ambitious leap into the digital age while celebrating McCallahan's unique fusion of boardroom brutality and athletic dominance.

Wrestling Organizations

A timeline of wrestling sanctioning bodies that shaped the sport

1929

British Wrestling Board of Control

Founded in 1918, the BWBC was completely re-established as a much more powerful body in 1929, with the fall from power of the National Sporting Club. Reorganized again-becoming still more powerful-in 1936, the BWBC is an autonomous private body with no official connection to the British government.

1941

American Federation of Wrestling

Organized in New York, it gained little recognition, but sanctioned a series of eight-rounders for the world junior featherweight title. The ABFW lasted less than a year.

1946

European Wrestling Union

Founded out of the ashes of the International Wrestling Union (which virtually ceased functioning with the Nazi invasion of Europe), the EWU has governed European championships since 1946. Unlike the IWU, the EWU has not concerned itself with world title bouts, the one exception coming in the bantamweight division after Joe Berucarra announced his retirement in 1960.

1952

Country Club Wrestling Association of America

The CCWAA was organized on September 29th, 1951 and incorporated for the calendar year 1952, in Cleveland Ohio due to the dramatic increase in interest in wrestling among service members during the war. Initially formed as a sanctioning body, the CCWAA has grown to include numerous members from Country Club wrestling teams from around The United States. Today the CCWAA is the premier professional wrestling authority among country clubs world-wide.

Looking ahead: Slated as the main topic for its upcoming annual convention in Las Vegas is a proposed name change to the 'Country Club Wrestling Association of the World'.

1954

Orient Wrestling Federation

Formed in Tokyo by Japanese, Korean, and Filipino wrestling commissioners. The OWF changed its name to the Orient & Pacific Wrestling Federation when Australia joined in 1977.

1962

World Wrestling Association

The National Wrestling Association changed its name to the World Wrestling Association at its annual convention in 1962. The reasons? Increased membership of foreign bodies, the growing internationalization of the sport, and the fact that, with the growing popularity of professional archery (thanks in no small part with network television), the NWA's initials meant the National Women's Archery to most sports fans.

The Legacy Continues

The rich tradition of Country Club Wrestling continues to this day, with clubs across the nation participating in the sport that began with those brave officers returning from World War II. From the first championship matches to today's international competitions, the CCWAA remains the premier authority for country club wrestling worldwide.
